Major Kitchen Renovation

Kitchen Designed by Joan Mazzaferro

Built by New England Design & Construction

Reason for the redesign:

This client felt that the existing kitchen in their home was very generic, builder-grade, unappealing, and in a different style than what they would prefer. So, the entire kitchen was gutted.

Specifics of the redesign:

The pantry location was at the end of the kitchen, in a location that didn’t seem to make sense. Additionally, they felt that it wasn’t set up in a way that facilitated people who cook a lot. The remodel was meant to increase the functionality of the kitchen as a whole, change the aesthetic entirely, and create a space that would be the heart of the home.

New cabinets, all new finishes, and increased storage capacity as well as specialized features like a double pull-out rack storage for spices, oils, and specialty cooking ingredients were integrated into the cabinet design. A modular storage system traditionally seen for retail design or tool storage in garages was used within the cabinets housing the pans to hang the pans, but then is out of view enclosed within the cabinet wall.

By replacing the French doors with sliding doors, the area allowed for circulation and the footprint of the island were able to be changed.

New Work Triangle

A better work triangle was instituted in the kitchen by rearranging appliance locations for the prep, cooking, and cleanup areas. The pantry is now centrally located behind the white door seen in the photo above.

The island was enlarged and better lighting installed for task work. A hidden USB charging station lives within a drawer in the kitchen island as well, allowing minimal surface clutter.

A ventilation duct was run to the exterior of the home to replace the recirculating fan.
